I am Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at Rice University. My research and teaching interests focus 19 th., 20 th, and 21st. Century Caribbean Culture, with emphasis on Race and Ethnicity, Politics, Violence and Visual Culture. My current book project, Dangerous People: Hegemony, Representation and Culture in Contemporary Venezuela, explores the relationship between popular mobilization, radical politics and culture in Venezuela. I am the author of La humanidad como mercancía. La esclavitud moderna en América  (2014), Solventar las diferencias: La ideología del mestizaje en Cuba (2003) and Albert Camus.
